Massimo Busin, MD: Prof. Busin was appointed Professor Ordinario di Malattie dell’Apparato Visivo at the University Statale di Ferrara in Ferrara, Italy.
Clement Chan, MD: Dr. Chan received the 2018 Honored Alumnus Award from the Alumni Association of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
Michael Chiang, MD: Prof. Chiang was elected a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. He and two other AOS members at the Casey Eye Institute (Drs. John Morrison and David Wilson) wrote a K-12 mentored clinician-scientist program grant that was funded by the National Eye Institute. Prof. Chiang also has begun to serve as Chair of the AAO IRIS Registry Analytics Committee.
Reza Dana, MD: Prof. Dana gave the Plenary Address to the 121st Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society as well as the Streilein Lecture at the 30th Biennial Cornea Conference in Boston, MA. In addition, Prof. Dana will receive the Friedenwald Award at ARVO this year.
Tamara R. Fountain, MD: Prof. Fountain is the current President of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.
Robert A. Goldberg, MD: Prof. Goldberg served as the immediate Past President of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in 2017.
Gerald J. Harris, MD: Prof. Harris served as President of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in 2017.
David Garway-Heath, MD: Prof. Garway-Heath was elected President of the European Glaucoma Society.
Mary Elizabeth Hartnett, MD: Prof. Hartnett will receive the Weisenfeld Award at ARVO this year.
Henry Jampel, MD: Prof. Jampel has been named the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the Ophthalmology Glaucoma journal.
Judy E. Kim, MD: Prof. Kim has been elected to the Retina Hall of Fame as one of the 243 Charter Inductees. According to the organization, “these individuals are worthy of this special recognition based on their significant achievements in the practice of medicine and contributions to the retina subspecialty.”
Walter Lisch, MD: Prof. Lisch gave the 1917-2017 Anniversary Lecture on Reis-Bucklers corneal dystrophy at the University Eye Clinic in Cologne.
Mark J. Mannis, MD: Prof. Mannis received the 2017 Claes Dohlman Award for Teaching from the Cornea Society, presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology in New Orleans.
David Sarraf, MD: Prof. Sarraf will give the LuEsther T. Mertz Lecture in New York in April 2018 and the Mark J. Daily Lecture at Loyola University, Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
Joel S. Schuman, MD: Prof. Schuman will receive the Fight for Sight Alumni Achievement Award at ARVO this year.
Jonathan Sears, MD: Prof. Sears has received and RPB Physician-Scientist Award for studies assessing metabolic plasticity of hypoxia inducible factor stabilization in the prevention of retinopathy of prematurity.
Daniel P. Schaefer, MD: Dr. Schaefer is the Vice President of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.
Carol L. Shields, MD: Prof. Shields (and her husband Jerry) was the recipient of the Reverend Clarence E. Shaffrey, Saint Joseph’s University.
Jerry A. Shields, MD: Prof. Shields gave the 2018 W. Richard Green Lecture at the Macula Society Meeting (“Invisible Intraocular Tumors in Adults: Detection with Multimodal Imaging”). Together with Dr. Carol Shields, Dr. Shields was the recipient of the Reverend Clarence E. Shaffrey, Saint Joseph’s University. Dr. Shields also was recognized as having the best scientific presentation at the annual AAPOS meeting (Medulloepithelioma). Dr. Shields has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology. In addition, Prof. Shields is the recipient of an endowed chair at the Wills Eye Hospital.
Stephen H. Tsang, MD, PhD: Dr. Tsang received the 2018 Young Investigator Award from the Macula Society and presented a lecture entitled, “Patient-Specific Mutations Impair BESTROPHIN1’s Essential Role in Mediating Ca2+-Dependent Cl- Currents in Human RPE.”
David Wallace, MD, MPH: Prof. Wallace was appointed Chair of Ophthalmology at his alma mater, Indiana University.
Robert Waller, MD: Prof. Waller received the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award. Previously, Dr. Waller served as President and CEO of the Mayo Clinic as well Chair of the Ophthalmology Department at the Mayo Clinic. As many of you know, Prof. Waller is a recipient of the Lucien Howe Medal.
