Frederick Verhoeff, MD was a prominent AOS member. One of the first graduates of the Johns Hopkins Medical School, he served on the faculty of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary as an ophthalmologist and ophthalmic pathologist. He became a member of the society in 1905, served as president in 1938, and was a member for 63 years. The Verhoeff Lecture was established in his honor and first delivered in 1961. It is periodically delivered as part of the Knapp Symposium and may be on a subject of the presenter’s interest that is related to the symposium. A manuscript should be prepared in conjunction with the lecture and submitted to the Transactions of the American Ophthalmological Society for on-line publication. The lecture and manuscript should be a summary of the presenter’s clinical and research area of interest including appropriate illustrations and references. Recipients do not have to be AOS members.
